The Byrdland was designed by jazz guitarists Hank Garland and Billy Byrd, and it could be considered as the first of the Gibson Artist series. This was a range of high-end jazz instruments, produced in very small numbers for discerning musicians, and launched in the early 1960s. These were very expensive guitars, but of a standard rarely seen elsewhere.

1958 zone 1 US prices: Byrdland $575 ($590 natural finish)
