The RD series brochure, although dated 1978 was most likely printed in late 1977. It features the entire RD (research and development) series: three guitars, Artist, Standard and Custom, and two basses: Artist and Standard. The full-colour brochure runs to eight pages, with one model/page, plus an extra page introduction to the series. Dimensions 10" x 7".
The RD series was indeed a step forward in guitar electronics; the Artist and Custom models were Gibson's earliest active instruments, but further than that, the Artist models were fitted with an intricate circuit board developed in conjunction with Bob Moog, to allow a range of effects: bright mode, expansion and compression. Full details of the use of this circuitry is included here. Later these effects would be fitted to other models, the semi-acosutic ES-Artist and the solid-body Les Paul Artist.
