This was the first and only US catalog appearance of the reissued 1955 Les Paul Special, despite the fact it was produced as early as 1974. Initially it was intended as a limited edition model only, but good sales in 1974 allowed it to join the regular Gibson line in the late seventies. Unfortunately the LP55/78 never matched the 1974 reissue in terms of sales, and the model was dropped once again in 1979.

Zone 1 US prices for 1978 were $699-749 for the Les Paul Deluxe, and $619 for the Les Paul 55.
