Page 6 details two bass guitar models, the Gibson EB-1 and Gibson EB-2. Although this page is titled 'Electro-Acoustic bass guitars' only the EB-2 is an electro acoustic; the EB-1 (unlike the Hofner 500/1 Violin bass, shown on page 32) has a solid body - it is a reissue of the original 1950s Gibson EB bass.
The image of the EB-2 shown here had been used in all Selmer catalogues from at least as early as 1965 - though this instrument (with early 1960s bar bridge) actually precedes this date by a year or two. In actual fact, production of the single pickup Gibson EB-2 had pretty much discontinued by 1971, though the dual-pickup EB-2D (not mentioned here) was still shipping, albeit in very small numbers. The next (1972) Selmer catalogue only lists the EB-2D. Note also the only finish listed here is Sunburst, though the August 1971 Selmer price list also mentions Walnut as an option.
The Gibson EB-1 bass was a short lived model with the bulk of production in the period 1970-1971. This then, is the final UK catalogue appearance of both the EB-1 and single pickup EB-2.
The EB-1 didn't get much of a write up:
Original violin-shape solid body bass. One humbucking pick-up. Hand rest.
August 1971 UK prices for these basses were as follows:
code | model | finish | price |
---|---|---|---|
5447 | EB-1 | Walnut | £274 |
5445/02 | EB-2 | Sunburst | £350 |
5445/16 | EB-2 | Walnut | £350 |
The suggested case for the EB-2 was shaped-case 5966, and shaped-case 5965 for the EB-1 (see cases, page 44).
