Gibson 1958 electric guitars and amplifiers catalogue, page 35. This was the launch of the Gibson electric doubleneck; Gibsons first two models in the series were the Double-12 and Double Mandolin.

Both were hollow-bodied instruments, though with no f-holes; the guitar had a spruce top, maple back and sides, and mahogany necks. This was the case for several years until, in 1962, construction changed to a the SG-style solid mahogany body.

These models only sold in the smallest numbers; they were custom-order instruments and 1958, the first year of manufacture, was the peak year in terms of orders, with 17 Double 12s and 15 Double Mandolins shipped that year.

1958 US zone 1 prices: Double Mandolin $435; Double Twelve $475
