Aria guitars of the 1960s-1980s were typically built by Matsumoku in Matsumoto Japan. Matsumoku are one of the most respected of Japanese manufacturers, building guitars for the likes of Norlin (Epiphone), Gretsch (Dorado) and Guild (Madeira). But before all of these, Matsumoku built guitars for Arai & Co. - a music company started by Japanese guitarist Shiro Arai. He ordered guitars from Matsumoku from as early as 1963 with numbers increasing exponentially throughout the decade.
Matsumoku produced a number of different models, and any of these could be supplied with specific branding, finishes, body styles or levels of ornamentation, often using the same basic hardware. And many of these guitars started out as an Aria.
