Gibson 1958 electric guitars and amplifiers catalog. Page 6. The archtops continue with the Gibson Byrdland guitar. The Byrdland was designed by jazz guitarists Hank Garland and Billy Byrd, and it could be considered as the first of the Gibson Artist series. This was a range of high-end jazz instruments, produced in very small numbers for discerning musicians, and launched in the early 1960s. These were very expensive guitars, but of a standard rarely seen elsewhere.
