The RD series was indeed a step forward in guitar electronics; the Artist and Custom models were Gibson's earliest active instruments, but further than that, the Artist models were fitted with an intricate circuit board developed in conjunction with Bob Moog, to allow a range of effects: bright mode, expansion and compression. Full details of the use of this circuitry is included here. Later these effects would be fitted to other models, the semi-acoustic ES-Artist and the solid-body Les Paul Artist.
