The 4003 initially debuted as a 4001 made for roundwound strings. Eventually, the neck laminations and truss rods were redesigned so that the 4003 could take any string, and the 4001 was phased out in 1986

1983 Rickenbacker 4003 Bass in near mint condition. Other than a small nick on the back of the neck this bass is basically flawless. It has also never been altered from it's original form, including no holes drilled to fit non-original tuners. I was very fortunate to have found an unused set of Grover Slimline Wavy 140C tuners a few weeks ago, which are the original type of tuners this bass had when it was manufactured.
