The Gibson RD custom

Produced briefly in the late 1970s at Gibson's famous Kalamazoo plant (Michigan, USA). Like the RD Artist, the RD Custom had an inbuilt pre-amplifier (active electronics) with no passive mode. It was not so highly appointed though - no gold hardware or headstock inlays. Shown here in walnut finish.

Although the Custom had active electronics, it did not actually have the same Moog expansion and compression circuitry of the Artist, but did have the switchable bright mode.

Available: 1977-1979

Hardware: Schaller tuners, tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece. Nickel plated throughout.
